Rice reoviruses, which comprise the genera Phytoreovirus, Fijivirus, and Oryzavirus in the family Reoviridae, are transmitted by cicadellid leathoppers or planthoppers in a persistent-propagative manner.Rice reoviruses cause serious diseases to economic crops, including rice, maize, and wheat in many parts of the word.To understand the mechanisms enabling the transmission of rice reoviruses by insect vectors, we established the insect cell lines derived from leafhoppers and planthoppers.
