Body Sensor Networks (BSNs) integrating micro sensor nodes with wireless communication are becoming flourishing in medical applications. This project developed a BSN-based portable and wearable monitor integrating micro sensors with mobile devices (such as cellphone and PDA) for monitoring and diagnosing respiratory diseases including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS),chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. The system uses a homemade micro flow sensor to detect comprehensive respiratory parameters, uses tri-axis micro accelerometer to detect body posture and motion intensity, and uses a micro photoelectric sensor to detect oxygen saturation of blood. The system can be used as both sleep recorder and spirometer. The real-time vital signs are detected and transmitted wirelessly through Bluetooth to a mobile device. The transmitted data are processed and analyzed in the mobile device and can be further transmitted to a remote medical center and physicians through mobile cellular networks or Internet for comprehensively analyzing, assessing, and diagnosing the diseases. In addition, the system also comprises comprehensive software used for monitoring and analyzing data on PC and smart-phone,the report of which can be sent to professional physicians for diagnosis. The system is easy to use,low-cost,and practicable for mass production.
