Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) is a unique clonal cancer that threatens the worlds largest carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) with extinction. The cancer is transmitted by cell implantation by biting during social interactions, and generally results in death within 6 months after the emergence of the first lesions.Cytogenetic analyses demonstrate that DFTD is caused by a rogue cell line, which emerged once at least 15 years ago.Devil Facial Tumours (DFT) possess complex, but highly conserved chromosomal rearrangements and high genomic stability.Recently, however, four distinct chromosomal strains have been described.
