It is estimated that all the currently known breast cancer susceptibility genes account for < 25% of the familial aggregation of breast cancer and the majority of the familial clustering of breast cancer is unexplained.In the current study, we investigated if CD44 polymorphisms are associated with increased susceptibility to breast cancer in Caucasian and African American populations.Direct nucleotide sequencing analysis identified a novel polymorphism (designated as CD44 Ex2+14 A>G)in the CD44 intronl region in 90% of breast cancer patients as well as additional novel polymorphisms in the CD44 exon2 coding region in 43% of breast cancer patients.
