An intriguing feature of higher plant embryogenesis is that embryo proper gives rise to a plant, whereas a suspensor is eliminated by programmed cell death (PCD) at certain time point.The phenomenon has been known for a hundred years, but the regulatory mechanism underlying remains largely unknown.
