The friction induced volatile products formation for symmetric and asymmetric polymer friction pairs as revealed by mass-spectrometry is discussed. The examples include the symmetric and asymmetric polymer-polymer and polymer-metal friction pairs. In particular, we show that volatile products of polymers formed upon friction may differ from those formed upon thermal decomposition of the polymers or subjected to other modes of fracture (e.g.cleavage of brittle polymers).
