The importance of proper hydration and the impact of dehydration on physical performance are well established.Whether further benefits in performance can be achieved by combining proper hydration with additional nutrients and ingredients is of current interest for both safety and athletic performance.The presentation will review the research evidence related to athletic performance and potential contributions attributable to carbohydrate,protein,and caffeine.At the other end of the spectrum,physical activity in the general population is becoming increasingly important in view of the increase of sedentary lifestyle and obesity at a global level.The initiative "Exercise is Medicine?" will be presented as an example of how the American College of Sports Medicine is promoting the adoption of healthier lifestyles and physical activity as part of physician counseling.
