A grid-controlled ion extraction can suppress the fluctuation of the source plasma because a virtual anode formed in the extraction gap works as a kind of "dam".Yoshida et al.applied this extraction scheme to a laser-ablation plasma,which has an intrinsic large flux variation,and discussed the applicability of the grid-controlled laser ion source (LIS) to the driver accelerators for Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF) [1].
