In heavy ion fusion (HIF),the ion sources located in the uppermost stream of the HIF driver accelerators are required to stably supply heavy ion beams with high current (~0.5 A) and low emittance (~1 mm-mrad) with a duration of about 20 μs when a driver design based on induction accelerators is adopted. As one of highbrightness ion beam extraction schemes,Kwan et al.proposed a merging multibeamlet extraction scheme,in which a lot of small beamlets are simultaneously extracted from a plasma source and then merged into a single beam [1].Compared with a conventional large-aperture beam extraction scheme, this scheme has an advantage that it is applicable to various plasma sources.
