Contraction of smooth muscle is controlled by the free [Ca2+] in the muscle cells and modulated by signalling processes targeting the kinases and phosphatases in the activation/deactivation processes.Ca2+influx/release and the modulation pathways are activated by changes in membrane potential and after receptor stimulation.The small G-protein RhoA/Rho-kinase pathway and the protein kinase C, which have been shown to inhibit the myosin dephosphorylation, have received much attention as important modulators of Ca2+ sensitivity.In addition, other signalling pathways are operational.
