After the nuclear havaries in March 2011, and after decades of debate, Germany decided to outphasc nuclear power plants significantly as early as possible while, still, achieving climate mitigation commitments and not compromising consumer costs and the competitiveness of German industries.This is opening g up extraordinary chances and opportunities, but also risks and issues.Contributing to low carbon patterns such a major transition is tied to quite a few follow up challenges as regards financing, liabilities, and technological progress.Therefore, monitoring efforts that combine scientific path finding and societal debate are necessary.The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, IASS, and the German Council for Sustainable Development cooperate in designing and promoting new solutions to the grid architecture, renewable power, storage technologies, smart metering, and the ways and means to provide residual fossil power.Science and research have a special role in the energy transition.This is true both for the natural and technical sciences as well as for the humanities and social sciences.
