World Heritage Convention and Sustainable Development in Arid and Semi-Arid Land

The Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage frequently abbreviated as the World Heritage Convention commemorates its 40th anniversary in 2012.Many of the 40th anniversary events have been dedicated to exploring the relationships between heritage conservation and sustainable development.Sustainable development often finds its meaning in practice at scales beyond that of individual World Heritage sites.Ecological constraints characteristic of arid and semi-arid lands such as water scarcity,sparsely distributed vegetation,and wildlife species with extensive ranges also favour planning and management of sites at scales beyond the boundaries of the nominated and/or designated property.This paper explores approaches for addressing identification,nomination and management of cultural and natural World Heritage properties within a regional and/or landscape planning context.The use of remote sensing and associated technologies and tools in combination with on-the-ground stakeholder negotiations can provide a basis for construction of scenarios for regional sustainable development that promote the long-term conservation of World Heritage sites situated within them is encouraged.Potential application of that approach to selected designated and potential sites in arid and semi-arid lands is briefly described.
