The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is regarded as an ideal area in the study of response mechanism of ecosystem to climate change, because the plateau is relatively undisturbed owing to low population and its fragile eco-environment characteristics.Changes of snow and vegetation in this extreme environment are important indicators of climate changes.Studying the relationship between snow and vegetation is important in interpretation of the ecosystem responses to climate changes. For dry and cold plateau, snow is one of the most important climatic factors besides temperature and precipitation, affecting vegetation activity and hence onset of the growing season. This study used 500m MODIS data sets for the period of 2000-2010 to examine the snow-vegetation relationships regarding to: 1) influence of snow phenology (e.g.,the number of snow cover days and snowmelt timing) on the plant growth (e.g.,the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)) in different climate regions.2) effect of snow phenology on onset of the growing season. The study revealed that length of snowing days and snowmelt dates have a significant impact on the NDVI variation in spring and summer over large areas.Shorter snowing days and earlier snowmelt dates resulted in higher NDVI values and earlier onset of vegetation. But this relationship varies depending on geographic regions within the plateau.Snow significantly affects the vegetation growth in central and northwestern region such as the Kunlun Arid region, the Qiangtang semi-arid region, and the Ngari Tibetan semi-arid region.
