The standard radioiodine used throughout the world for diagnostic imaging of well-differentiated thyroid cancer has been 131I and, more recently, 123I in some countries.However, an additional radioiodine, 124I, is being evaluated in several countries including China, Germany, Italy, and the United States.This presentation will review the published data regarding the radiopharmacokinetics of 124I relative to 131I, the detection of remnant thyroid tissue and metastases with 124I PET-CT relative to 131I planar and SPECT-CT imaging, and the published data on the use of 124I for calculation of radiation absorbed dose to thyroid remnant tissue, thyroid cancer metastases, whole body, and other organs such as the salivary glands.
