Porous semiconductors is an attractive material in many areas, including optoelectronics, sensors, and thermoelectric devices. Many bottom-up syntheses based on self-assembly processes have been reported for mesoporous materials such as metal oxide, using various types of external templates for pore generation. In this presentation, I will present a bottom-up synthesis of mesoporous crystalline Si and other semiconductors by a new pore formation mechanism. The pores are generated by self-forming templates. The resulting porous silicon materials show a mesostructure composed of nano-sized interconnected Si primary particles and mesopores, both with tunable sizes, and the surface area as high as 580 m2 g-1.The advantages of the material, such as its nano-sized crystalline primary particles and high surface areas, enable increased photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate and extended working life.
