Familial dilated cardiomyopathy (FDCM) is a genetic cardiomyopathy defined by the presence of two or more familial members with idiopathic DCM, or the presence of DCM and the history of an unexplained sudden cardiac death under the age of 35 in a first degree relative.Among idiopathic cases, echocardiographic studies of asymptomatic relatives estimate a percentage of hereditary disease superior to 30%.This disease has an incomplete age-dependent penetrance and a multifactorial pathogenesis.An enormous genetic heterogeneity is characteristic; mutations in genes of sarcolemma, cytoskeleton, sarcomere, ion-channels and nuclear lamina protein components may be involved.
