Mandibular osteomyelitis can recur easily, become chronic, and tend to result in obstruction of blood flow in the lesion owing to destruction of vascular channels.A potentially promising treatment would be a threefold combination of(i)surgical debridement of infected tissues,(ii)scaffoldsupported bone tissue reconstruction with vascularization at the debrided site, and(iii)local antibiotic delivery using a resorbable vehicle in addition to systemic antibiotic administration to prevent infection recurrence during tissue reconstruction. Therefore,we attempted to develop a composite material composed of porous β-tricalcium phosphate(βTCP)and poly(lactic-co-glycolic)acid(PLGA)loaded with gatifloxacine(GFLX)as a resorbable and osteoconductive antibiotic implant.
