There is an increasing need for the petroleum industry to process the heavier ends of crude oils as potential feeds for making transportation fuels and other value added chemical products.This represents an opportunity for research and development of new processing technology related to the utilization of natural resources, saving energy and mitigating pollution.Typically, the higher the boiling point of a petroleum fraction, the more complex its composition, both in variety and structure of molecules present, which represents a greater challenge for organic analysis.Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) is an emerging technology, which has significantly expanded the peak capacity, resolution and sensitivity of a gas chromatographic analysis compared with conventional GC.This presentation will review many of the obstacles overcome in the optimization of parameters to expand the scope of GC × GC to the characterization of vacuum gas oils.
