Caffeine,arguably the most widely consumed psychoactive drugs,has been recently shown to protection neuronal injury in animal models of stroke,Parkinsons disease and multiple sclerosis.However,the mechanism by which caffeine afford neuroprotection is not clear.In this study,we studied the effect of chronic treatment with caffeine on spinal cord extract-induced neuronal damage,an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of multiple sclerosis in Wistar rats.Wistar rats were treated with caffeine or water in drinking water at dose of 10 or 30 mg/kg per day,starting from 7 d prior to immunization,until 35 d post-immunization.On day 7 following caffeine treatment,rats were immunized with guinea pig spinal cord homogenates emulsified in complete freund adjuvant (CFA),or with CFA alone.
