The role of the small GTPase Ran in spindle assembly has been recently uncovered to ensure the correct chromosome segregation and thus genetic stability in mammalian cells.Human Mogl, as the Ran nucleotide release factor, can down-regulate RanGTP in vitro, but the underlying molecular mechanism for Mog1 modulating the function of Ran remains elusive.
