1.Smart Spaces in Smart Buildings Smart buildings begin with smart spaces.Understanding the behavior of the occupants of a space leads to the ability to control building systems in new ways.Audiovisual and IT technologies are being used to reach beyond the traditional notion of "AV." The use of audiovisual system graphical user interfaces allows a "humanizing" of the technology and presents an intuitive control environment for occupants and facilities managers.Audiovisual control systems are programmed to enable the low-voltage subsystems within a building to be interconnected in new and synergistic ways, and provide valuable energy consumption and usage data for management and financial analysis.This data is being presented on audiovisual displays to allow occupants to readily understand their role in energy management, in order to change their behavior in positive ways.2.Standards as Development Tools Standards are rapidly evolving in the area of valid sustainability and energy programs.They are being developed and adopted to better define the linkage of subsystems within a building.Using a case study of a smart space, practitioners used STEP (Sustainable Technologies Environments Program,) the Audiovisual Systems Energy Management Standard, (ANSI/INFOCOMM 4:2012) and BIM (Building Information Modeling) to reach a new level of sustainable design in a sophisticated conference center environment.
