As global marine renewable energy technology moves from proof of concept and single device stage to commercial exploitation, there will be a need for robust academic testing and development facilities to be available to developers.This presentation will describe in detail the recent development of facilities and organization in the South West of England to support this requirement.Plymouth University and its local partners with the support of the UK national government have realized a brand-new, unique solution to the needs of technology developers operating in offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.The Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport (COaST) Laboratory has recently been completed to support academic research in marine renewables and ocean/coastal dynamics through the provision of wave tank capability.These facilities are unique internationally in their combining of wave, current and wind modeling capacity combined with state-of-the-art instrumentation.These facilities are co-ordinated through the UKs first Marine Energy Park.This organization represents Universities, renewable industry companies and local government to create a joined-up offering for technology developers and utilities wishing to develop their activities in marine renewables.The conclusion is that the facilities and organization described have created a huge synergy for the participants that will accelerate the development, deployment and commercial exploitation of wind, wave and tidal energy internationally.
