Depletion effect widely exists in colloids/polymer system, often resulting in the flocculation of the particles.1 Usually, the polymer is displaced from the interface, leading to a polymer-depleted zone.2 The driving force for the existence of the depletion zone is that the conformational entropy restrictions suffered by the polymer coil that, for non-adsorbing moieties, are not compensated by an adsorption energy. The depletion effect has very important applications in size-exclusion chromatography, which is widely used in polymer analysis.3 They further also reflect practical situations in biological systems and industrial products such as protein-polysaccharide mixtures in food or latex-polymer mixtures in paint.4,5 Recently, the geometry of the adsorbed thin layer tailored by the depletion interaction was reported by Xue.6-8 The PEG-mediated depletion interaction with the wall contributed to the entropic force for supramolecular assembling. The addition of middle-sized solvent into polymer solution will promote the self-organization of the polymer chains.
