  It is an essential task for newly upgraded undergraduate colleges to cultivate applied talents, and it is a key issue for them to understand how to cultivate applied talents.In order to train undergraduates of mathematics and applied mathematics specialty into applied talents with creative spirt who have the abilities to analyze and solve practical problems, to obtain new knowledge, to apply theories to practice and to write,and on the basis of the characteristics of being theoretical and practical of ordinary differential equation course, the paper discusses the teaching reform of the course from such three aspects as selecting appropriate teaching content, reforming teaching methods and approaches, and changing the ways of exams.
