The balance between pancreatic islet beta-cell growth and death (reflected in beta-cell mass) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of diabetes.Thus, better understanding of cell signals regulating beta-cell proliferation and anti-apoptosis will allow the development of therapcutic strategies for diabetes by preservation and expansion of beta-cell mass.It is known that growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) exert their biological effects through binding to respective receptors (GHR and IGF-1 R) to engage downstream signaling pathways and subsequently impact the beta-cell function.However, their collaborative roles in modulation of beta-cell mass and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood.
