In this paper, I explore the concept of "education for cosmopolitan citizenship" that builds upon theories of cosmopolitan democracy (Held, 1997) and seeks to expand traditional notions of citizenship learning to prepare young people to be engaged and participative citizens at all scales, from the local to the global.I argue that processes of globalization, including increased migration flows (both internal and international), require curricula to re-imagine the nation, not merely as multicultural but also as cosmopolitan.In doing so, I draw not only on my research and scholarship in various regions of the globe, and on my teaching experiences in Europe and beyond, but also on my work as a visiting professor in 2017, teaching intensive programmes for graduate students of education at Beijing Normal University, China and University of Washington, Seattle, USA.
