An efficient method for the removal of heavy metals from the ammoniacal solution is the solvent extraction process.In such process,well-estabfished extractants like hydroxyoximes (LIX 84,M-5640) and beta-diketones (LIX 54) are usually used.An overview on well-documented solvent extraction from ammoniacal solution leads us to conclude that LIX 54 presents some advantages over LIX 84.It is noted that LIX 54 provides low ammonia loading,ease of stripping and faster kinetics [1].Unexpectly,LIX 54 used in ammoniacal solutions is not stable in the Escondita copper plant in Chile,forming a degradation product of ketimine [2].Research by Cognis has resulted in a sterically hindered extractant (1-Phenyl-4-ethyl-l,3-octadione) that could replace the LIX 54,resistant to degradation in the presence of high concentrations of ammonia.In this paper,kinetics and mechanisms of the degradation ofbeta-diketones have been investigated.From these results,it can be concluded that the sterically hindered β-diketone is more chemically stable than the active substance of LIX54.This beta-diketone retains many of the outstanding properties of LIX 54 while the formation of ketimine is significantly decreased as the structure of the beta-diketone is altered in a systematic way.
