Central neurons encode information in bursts of action potentials (APs/spikes), but little is known about the gating behavior of voltage-gated ion channels during repetitive spike firing. We discover that when evoked by a pair or short burst of APs,currents mediated by voltage-gated potassium channels (Kvs) in central neurons facilitate in a frequency and voltage-dependent, but surprisingly Ca2+-independent manner.
