  Background and purpose: The effect of methamphetamine(MA)abuser on human brain morphology has been reported.Several studies show evidence of structural brain abnormalities associated with abuse of MA.However,the results from different studies are still inconsistent.This study aimed to explore the effect of intracranial volume(ICV)to the analysis of brain volume in both MA abusers and healthy control(HCs).Method: Ten MA abusers and 14 HCs were recruited with age and education matched.MRI was acquired on a 1.5 Tesla,Philips MR scanner.Axial T1-weighted images were acquired with 3D FFE pulse sequence.Brain volume and intracranial volume were estimated by FreeSurfer version 5.3.Absolute brain volume and brain volume normalized with ICV between MA abusers and HCs group were compared.Results: The absolute volume of gray matter in MA abuser are significant smaller than HCs group in left and right frontal gray matter,left and right temporal gray matter,right parietal gray matter,right occipital gray matter and left insular gray matter with the p values 0.0422,0.0473,0.0005,0.0008,0.0115,0.0203 and 0.0167 respectively,but the ICV normalized gray matter volume,the results only significant on left and right temporal gray matter with the p values 0.0127 and 0.0130 respectively.The absolute volume of basal ganglia showed a trend of smaller volume in MA abuser compared to that of the HCs group,but when the normalized with ICV was applied for the volume calculation,the trend turned to the opposite direction.Conclusions: The results demonstrated that ICV could be an affective factor for brain volume analysis in drug abuse study.
