  A precondition for occurrence any catalytic reaction is that molecules of reactants should reach active centres of catalyst.For this reason upon designing a catalytic reactor a mass transfer intensity should be adjusted to a reaction rate.On the other hand, flow resistance of the reactor, which is responsible for the pumping costs, is strictly connected with transport properties by the so-called heat (mass) and momentum transfer analogy: the better mass transport properties, the higher flow resistance, thus higher the pumping costs.Monolithic reactors, commonly applied to catalytic processes, offer advantageous flow resistance, but weak mass transfer, unlike packed bed reactors,another classical solution, which show satisfactory mass transfer coupled with excessively high flow resistances and poor catalyst exploitation due to large diffusional resistance in porous catalytic particles.The properties of both reactor types can hardly be changed within broad range of pararneters.
