Tritium is produced through a neutron capture by the deuterium atom in heavy water which is used as a moderator and coolant in CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) reactors.Careful calculation pointed out that the generation tritium would be around 2×l03Ci/MW annually in this type reactor. In addition, gases and liquids containing a large amount of tritium need be handled in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).Therefore, it is necessary to remove tritium from heavy water, exhaust gases and liquids to reduce radiation level to the environment, upgrade the heavy water, and recover tritium to reuse it as reactor fuel.
