Background Streptococcus mutans is the principal causative pathogen of human dental caries. The genome of S.mutans encodes more than 100 transcriptional regulators, including many putative regulators and hypothetical proteins. However, the regulatory functions of most regulators remain unknown, and the relationships between these regulators and the ability of biofilm formation, acid tolerance and adaption to environmental changes remain to be further characterized.
