Background Elevated cholesterol is widely associated with many pathologies; early research has shown highlevels of fecal cholesterol in ulcerative colitis and colon cancer subjects implicating aberrant cholesterol metabolism in these diseases.Surprisingly, members of the gut microbiota have been found to chemically reduce cholesterol at carbon 5 and 6 to generate coprostanol,a saturated sterol poorly absorbed and excreted into feces.
