Our initial research was on the use of antimatters in particle accelerators to understand free radical chemistry at a fundamental level. This included the role of extreme conditions and novel reaction media on free radical formation, and on reactivity and electronic structure of free radicals.A few of our breakthroughs from these fundamental basic science studies had immediate industrial implications;two of them are described in this seminar. The first one was on our studies of chemical kinetics which led to a breakthrough when studying the effect of extreme conditions on reactivity of free radicals, in particular under supercritical conditions. This triggered the interests in nuclear power plant industry since our data were suggestive of significant non-Arrhenius temperature dependence for reactions in water under extreme conditions. These conditions are relevant to some of the future generations of nuclear power plants.Second one is from our studies of free radical chemistry in ionic liquids.Ionic liquids are unique in being made only from ions and still being liquid at low temperatures.Ionic liquid properties are tunable by small changes in their structure.Understanding chemical processes in these solvents requires knowledge of their equilibrium and kinetics at the microscopic level. We started by providing such information for free radicals and radiation chemistry in these ubiquitous media. Our fundamental studies eventually led to applied science information in the fields of polymers and nanotechnology. This journey from antimatters to polymer industry will be discussed in the second part of this presentation.
