It is well known that carotenoids play a major role in protecting cells and tissues from oxidative damage, and the preventive effects are associated with their antioxidative activity.Animals do not make themselves carotenoids, but they can absorb carotenoids from their diets and transform and accumulate them in body tissues such as skin, gonad, and muscle.The noble scallop Chlamys nobilis, an important marine economic mollusk, display polymorphism not only in shell colors including orange, purple, brown, and orange-purple, but also in adductor colors and mantle.Our previous results demonstrated that total carotenoids content (TCC) in this scallop tissues from individuals with orange shell, adductor and mantle was significantly higher than the counterpart from individuals with brown shell, white adductor and mantle (Zheng HP, Liu HL, Zhang T, et al.Total carotenoid differences in scallop tissues of Chlamys nobilis (Bivalve: Pectinidae) with regard to gender and shell colour Food Chem, 2010, 122 (4): 1164-1167), suggesting orange scallops accumulated more TCC than brown ones.
