This presentation will summarise studies from our research team investigating the role of oxidative stress and inflammation on the progression of kidney disease and the associated vascular disease seen in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).Furthermore,we are conducting clinical trials with known antioxidants and inflammatory agents including fish oil,tocopherols,atorvastatin and astaxanthin on kidney and cardiovascular outcomes.We have undertaken molecular biological studies of single nucleotide polymorphisms of superoxide dismutase (SOD),glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase together with the activity of these enzymes in 169 patients with CKD.
