Citicoline inhibits apoptosis associated with cerebral ischemia and in several models of neurodegeneration has been able to potentiate neuroplasticity.It is a natural precursor of phospholipid synthesis, or rather serves as a choline source in the metabolic pathways for biosynthesis of acetylcholine and neuronal membrane phospholipids, mainly phosphatidylcholine.It can be used not only in cognitive impairment, but also in Parkinsons disease, head trauma, and amblyopia.The aim of the VITA study was to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of parenteral citicoline in geriatric syndrome with a complex clinical picture of confusion on a retrospective and observational basis.The studio di intervento nel decadimento vascolare lieve (IDEALE study) was an open-label, multicenter Italian study, the aim of which was to assess the effectiveness and safety of oral citicoline in elderly people with mild vascular cognitive impairment.
