本县位于豫西南南阳盆地东部,地处亚热带和暖温带的过渡地带,具有南北气候的特点。年平均气温14.6℃,年日照2038小时,无霜期226天,绿豆生育期间≥15℃,积温4153℃,年降雨量808毫米左右。地势平坦,土壤肥沃,适宜种植绿豆。但历年绿豆产量低而不稳,80年代以前,亩产一直徘徊在30公斤左右。从1980年以来绿豆产量步步上升,特别是中绿一号绿豆试种成功后,1983～1988年5年间,全县绿豆面积由4.5万亩发展到18.5万亩,单产由51公斤提高到125
