闽江水系总长2872公里,是福建省唯一的内河,流域面积60806平方公里,约占全省面积的一半,干支流经全省4个地、市,36个县份,是我国东南沿海流域面积最大的河流,是福建省山区与沿海的天然航道,也是该省山、海经济协作的黄金水道.当地人称其为“福建的母亲河”.闽江的综合开发利用对加强福建内陆和沿海的联系、改善全省交通结构、促进闽省经济整体协调发展和社会进步都将起到十分重要的作用.
