“东方”号载人飞船发射升空1957年8月26日,塔斯社宣布苏联洲际弹道导弹试验成功。同年10月,苏联成功发射了人类历史上第一颗人造地球卫星。苏联的动作急坏了美国政府。为了与苏联进行太空争霸,艾森豪威尔制订了一项雄心勃勃的载人航天计划——“水星计划”。该计划的目的就是抢在苏联前把美国人送上太空,因为在艾森豪威尔看来,送人上太空比在地面上部署区区几枚导弹更能制造轰动效应。
Launch of Manned Spacecraft “Orient” Launched on August 26, 1957, Tass announced the successful intercontinental ballistic missile test in the Soviet Union. In October of the same year, the Soviet Union successfully launched the first man-made earth satellite in human history. The Soviet Union’s move hastily damaged the U.S. government. Eisenhower has enacted an ambitious manned space program, Mercury, in order to compete with the Soviet Union in space. The plan’s aim is to rob Americans in space before the Soviet Union, because it seems to Eisenhower that giving space to space can create a sensational effect more than deploying several missiles on the ground.
