成立于1949年12月1日的中国国际书店(中国国际图书贸易总公司的前身),是新中国成立后唯一一个担任书刊进出口工作的机构。开始它以进口苏联出版的中文版图书在国内发行为主,后来逐步发展为以向世界各国进出口书刊为主要业务的单位。新中国成立伊始,一方面亟待通过出口书刊在国际上树立崭新的形象,另一方面,需要通过进口国外书刊,特别是科技方面的书刊,为经济文化建设提供支持。当时,由于美国对中国的封锁,这一工作主要是靠国外左派、共产党和进步人士办的小书店来进行的。它们被亲切地称为“红色书店”。本文的口述者曹健飞解放前主要在三联书店任职,1954年调入国际书店,一直工作了32年,直到1985年离休。他向我们讲述了上世纪五六十年代,国际书店如何同全世界书商建立合作关系,以及如何与一些国外同业结下深厚情谊。在中国对外传播历史上,这段中西文化交流的章节,其价值应被重新挖掘和客观评估。

They are affectionately called “red bookstore.” This essayist, Cao Jianfei, worked mainly at the Joint Publishing before liberation. In 1954 he transferred to the International Bookstore and worked for 32 years until his retirement in 1985. He told us about how the international bookstore established cooperative relations with booksellers around the world in the fifties and sixties of last century and how to build deep friendship with some foreign counterparts. In the history of China’s external communications, the value of this section of Sino-Western cultural exchanges should be re-tapped and objectively assessed.
