佛教传入中国,最初应是早期佛教图像的传播,南丝路沿途与长江中上游地区考古发现的大量早期佛像资料,对此便给予了充分的揭示。其后,在长江中下游区域也有了许多发现。通过对这些实物资料的分析研究,印证了早期佛像从长江上游向中下游传播的总体趋势。何志国新著《早期佛像研究》,对此便做了很多新的探讨。
