French hospital officials said on November 30, 2005 that a French woman whose face was bitten by a dog had recently undergone a facial transplant to obtain a new nose, lips, and jaw. This woman became the world’s first “face change” winner. The patient is in excellent condition. The French “Problem” weekly published on December 1, 2005 reported that the donors were from brain-dead living in Lille, a town in northern France. With the consent of the family, the medical staff from Lyons and Amiens took out the tissues, muscles, and arteriovenous veins needed for transplantation from the donor’s face on November 27th. On the same day and the next day, they were in a hospital in Amiens, northern city. French women undergo transplant surgery. After the operation, the hospital stated that the woman’s condition was “extremely good” and it looked “normal” after organ transplantation. The British “Banse Evening News” quoted hospital sources as saying on December 1st: “After surgery, the medical team is very excited. The patient status is still critical, but for many disfigurers, this is the world’s first successful facial transplant.”
