翡翠是在高温高压下形成的矿物。人工合成采用硅酸钠和硅酸铝在1100℃高温下熔融得到与翡翠成分完全一致的非晶质玻璃料,经粉碎过筛后用六面顶压机使其转化成有翡翠结构的产品。其翡色的致色元素主要是镍或锰,而翠色则主要是元素铬。
