Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul J.D'Ambrosio's Genuine Pretending:On the Philosophy of the Zhuangzi,is a timely,interesting,and enjoyable work that gives an extensive overview of contemporary scholarly literature on the Zhuangzi (and Confucianism) whilst offering an alternative possible reading of this text.The Zhuangzi,an ancient Daoist text full of weird and wonderful characters and stories,has inspired a multitude of different readings.Utilising and building upon their previous publications,the authors wish to depart "from more common spiritual or metaphysical frameworks" and attempt to place the text of the Zhuangzi within its historical context,viewing it as a "sociopolitical critique of its times" that can help one to endure and perhaps even "thrive in adverse circumstances" (ix).Playing with Brook Ziporyn's "wild card" metaphor i.e.(transforming the "wild card" into a "joker card" (2)) and highlighting the importance of humour,they suggest that significant parts of the Zhuangzi (if not the whole text) can be read in the spirit of what they call "genuine pretending" (16-17).
