Four companies are using gaze-type FPSAs in DARPA’s tank destroyer program, respectively, using techniques that were considered only a few years ago beyond the current state of the art. The new auto-finder allows the launched aircraft, a fly-off anti-tank missile, to launch on a selected surface tank and attack the tank as it overflies its head space. When used in portable systems, missiles can also destroy even more advanced tanks, as all tanks are more likely to be wounded by the fire that attacked them. The mid-70s saw a focal plane array (FPA)
