The optimal fatty acid and lipid requirements of Penaeus monodon were estimated by measuring the lipid and fatty acid digestibility in the series of matched diets. Total lipid digestibility was similar at 45, 75 and 105 g / kg dietary lipid levels, while total lipid digestibility at dietary lipid levels of 135 g / kg was significantly reduced (P ≤ 0.05). Total lipid digestibility was unaffected by fatty acid composition with the exception of diets containing 17 g / kg polyunsaturated fatty acids and 45 g / kg total lipid. Long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (20: 5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22: 6n-3) showed the highest digestibility. Fatty acids with unsaturated bonds, including monounsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid (18: 1 n-9), have higher digestibility. The digestibility of long-chain saturated fatty acids was lowest, and their digestibility decreased as the fatty acid chain length increased. The results of this study clearly show that the lipid content of the diet affects its own digestibility, and the fatty acid composition of the total fat affects the total fat and the individual fatty acid digestibility.
