歧义(ambignity)指的是一个句子结构有多种不同的意义,每个意义都可以独立地作为一个语言单位出现在实际话语中。如“你们六个一组”,既可以理解为“你们六个人是一组”,也可以解理为“你们这些人,按六人一组来划分。”歧义是语言中的普遍现象,它几乎存在于各种语言之中。歧义在语言的表达方面有一定的积极作用,它能增加语言的生动性和幽默性。如英国著名剧作家奥斯卡·王尔德(Qscar Wilder)在他的作品《认真的重要》(The Impor tance of Being Earnest)中有这样一段对话:
