A series of studies reported by the American Society for Radiation Oncology and Oncology show that radiotherapy is effective and promising for pediatric brain tumors. The Harvard Medical School and the Boston Children’s Hospital Radiotherapy Joint Center have shown that the survival of children with brain stem, midbrain and gliomas is significantly prolonged after high-dose, aggressive radiotherapy. Patricia Eifel, an associate professor of radiotherapy at the University of Texas Medical Department in collaboration with J Robert Cassady and James A Belli, recently reported that the prognosis is better than in adults, and successful treatment is available for young children with minimal sequelae. The results of a 10-year study in Boston confirmed that the 5-year and 10-year overall survival of 80 gliomas was 50% and 41%, respectively. After radiotherapy, 69 of 80 (86%) had improved clinical symptoms or were in stable condition. Among 27 children with gliomas, the 5-year survival rate of 73% was significantly higher than that of 38% of 53 children with brain stem disease. Among these children, those with cerebral syndrome have the highest prognosis
