Doctors use capsule endoscopy technology to observe the patient’s entire small intestine. The device used is the Given Imaging Imaging System, which is actually a disposable miniature camera wrapped in tiny edible capsules. The patient does not need to be sedated, not to need surgery, and the instrument is able to image the small intestine. The instrument is produced by the Israeli company Yokneam and has been approved for listing by the FDA. The instrument, commonly known as the “camera pill,” can enter parts of the digestive tract that are generally inaccessible to endoscopes and can help detect small bowel disorders, such as segmentality.
